WIPA NTC Supplemental Training: Understanding Special Medicaid Benefits Teleconference

Format: Teleconference

Date(s): July 8, 2010

Description:

Time: 2:00 – 4:00pm Eastern Time

This two hour training session, presented by Lucy Miller, will provide a detailed description of the three types of Special Medicaid Benefits provided to certain groups of former SSI recipients:

- Individuals who lost their SSI due to eligibility for or an increase in CDB payments;

- Former SSI recipients who would otherwise be eligible for SSI except for cost-of-living allowances received in SSDI payments (Pickle Amendment people); and

- Individuals who lost SSI due to eligibility for or an increase in DWB payments.

The session will focus on how eligibility for these special protected classes is determined as well as how paid work affects eligibility for Special Medicaid Benefits. Advice will also be provided on how to support beneficiaries in applying for these Medicaid benefits and how to avoid or correct common eligibility determination errors made by State Medicaid agencies.

Upon completion of this training, participants will:

1. Identify and describe the three different categories of Special Medicaid Beneficiaries.

2. Describe the eligibility requirements for Special Medicaid Benefits for each of the three categories.

3. Describe how paid employment affects eligibility for Special Medicaid Benefits.

4. Identify common problems beneficiaries encounter when eligibility determinations for Special Medicaid Benefits are made and describe ways of overcoming these common problems.

Registration Information

Who can attend this training?

This teleconference training is open to all WIPA project staff, SSA Demonstration Project staff, and community partners who have participated in the CWIC Initial Training and successfully completed the CWIC assessment and certification process.   Individuals successfully completing CWIC Recertification or Provisional Certification are also included in this group.

To be eligible to participate in this training, all registrants must be provisionally or fully CWIC certified, or recertified!

All WIPA Project Directors and Managers are also encouraged to participate regardless of their certification status.

This training is recommended for CWICs with all levels of work incentives knowledge – including the most advanced and experienced CWICs.  Numerous common misunderstandings about the various special protected classes of former SSI recipients will be dispelled during this intensive training session.  Due to the complexity of the subject matter, participants will be required to read a detailed briefing paper on Special Medicaid Benefits in advance of the training.
