WIPA NTC Supplemental Training: Providing WIPA Services to Veterans with Disabilities Teleconference

This two-part teleconference training event, presented by Lucy Miller, provides practical information on how to effectively provide the full range of Work Incentives Planning and Assistance (WIPA) services to veterans who receive both SSA disability benefits and disability benefits from the US Department of Defense and/or the Veteran’s Administration (VA).
Participants are expected to register for and participate in BOTH parts of this training event. The two parts are not intended to be provided as stand-alone events.
Part 1 of this training event will cover a wide range of topics including special considerations for providing WIPA services to veterans with disabilities, conducting outreach to the veteran’s population, understanding the Veterans Administration’s Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Services (VR&E) system, accessing specialized sources of employment assistance for veterans with disabilities, identifying education and training programs available to veterans, and accessing services for homeless veterans.
Part 2 of this training event will provide a detailed overview of the benefits available to veterans with disabilities including the disability evaluation and rating process, Military retirement based on disability, VA Disability Compensation, VA Disability Pension, healthcare benefits available from the VA, and a variety of specialized benefits for veteran’s with disabilities. This session will also cover how paid employment affects the benefits provided to veterans with disabilities as well as a description of how Military/VA disability benefits interact with SSA disability benefits.
Upon completion of this training, participants will:
- Understand how to conduct effective outreach to WIPA eligible veterans with disabilities
- Understand how to access the various sources of vocational rehabilitation, training and employment supports available to veterans
- Understand how eligibility for Military retirement based on disability, VA Disability Compensation and VA Disability Pension is established
- Identify a variety of specialized benefits available to veterans with disabilities
- Understand how paid employment affects benefits for veterans with disabilities
- Understand how Military/VA benefits interact with SSA disability benefits including SSDI and SSI
Who should register for this training event?
Since this training is intended to build upon existing work incentives knowledge, it is only open to WIPA project staff, SSA Demonstration project staff, and community partners who have participated in the CWIC Initial Training and successfully completed the CWIC assessment and certification process. Individuals successfully completing CWIC Recertification or Provisional Certification are also included in this group.
To be eligible to participate in this training, all registrants must be provisionally or fully CWIC certified, or recertified!
As a supplemental training, CWICs are not required to participate in this two-part teleconference. However, we strongly encourage all WIPA personnel to register for this event to ensure that your project is equipped to provide comprehensive information and effective support to beneficiaries who are veterans of our armed forces.
All WIPA Project Directors and Managers are also encouraged to participate regardless of their certification status.

Registration for this two-part training event is limited to 100 people. Once registration is closed, all individuals will be notified via email as to whether or not their participation in the session is confirmed.
